Michael Adebayo Olayinka (born 23 September 1999), professionally known as Ruger, is a popular Nigerian singer and songwriter. He is currently signed to Jonzing World, record label owned by D’Prince and a subsidiary of Mavin Records.
Ruger rose to prominence in 2021 after he was discovered by D’Prince and inked a recording contract with Jonzing World with a publishing and distribution deal with Columbia Records, and Sony Music Entertainment, UK division.
Early Life and Education
Ruger was born to Mr. and Mrs. Adebayo Olayinka on September 23, 1999, in Lagos where he grew up with his siblings under the intensive care of his parents.
The superstar singer is from a Christian household, and followed his parents footsteps to continue his faith despite becoming a superstar.
Ruger began and completed both his primary and secondary school education in Lagos State where he grew up with his siblings. He proceeded to an elite university in the Southwest region of Nigeria where he is currently pursuing a degree.
Ruger began playing the piano at a very young age, and as a teenager, he participated in both the church choir and the music band at his high school. He started writing songs and performing them live at concerts and school events.
D’Prince himself gave him the name “Ruger” after discovering him. In a partnership with Columbia Records, D’Prince announced in January 2021 that Ruger had been signed to Jonzing World and Sony Music Entertainment UK.
Following the release of “One Shirt” with Rema, D’Prince introduced him to the public. He released Ruger, a self-titled single from his first EP project called PANDEMIC, on February 19, 2021.
With the release of his debut extended play and its smash song “Bounce,” which became his major success and peaked at number one on Apple Music in Nigeria and other African nations, he gained widespread notoriety.
On November 19, 2021, he released The Second Wave, his second extended play that was entirely produced by Kukbeats.
Ruger was nominated for two 2021 AFRIMA (All Africa Music Awards) categories: Most Promising African Artiste of the Year and Best Artist, Duo, or Group in African Reggae, Ragga, or Dancehall.
Ruger was nominated for the Best New Artist and Best Reggae or Dancehall Act of the Year awards by AEAUSA (African Entertainment Awards USA).
A sizable Entertainment Residency Endorsement Deal between RUGER and the Eko Hotel was struck in August 2021.
Ruger was named by Vogue Magazine UK as one of the 22 Musicians Who Will Rule In 2022. On June 17, 2022, he adds three songs (Girlfriend, WeWe, and Warning) to The Second Wave Deluxe, a prior CD that was also created by Kukbeatz.
Ruger is one of the fast rising musicians in Nigeria, making good music with the likes of Rema, DNA Twins, Ayra Starr and other top professionals from Mavin Records and outside.
