Early Life and Education
Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe who is professionally known as Ayra Starr was born in Cotonou, Benin, on June 14, 2002, and raised there as well as in Lagos, Nigeria. She was born to Kwara State, Nigerian parents, and has four siblings.
Due to her father’s business, her family relocated frequently during her high school years, which made it difficult for her to make lasting friendships.
Her interest in singing stems primarily from her family because she was reared in a musically inclined household. She started writing songs with her brother when she was just 10 years old and sung in a high school choir.
She attended Les Cours Sonou University and graduated with a BA in political science and international relations. She experienced a lot of bullying from her peers during her time in college due of her age and attractiveness.
Ayra Starr turned to music as a way to cope with the sentiments she felt as a result of being teased. Ayra Starr’s mother has always supported her desire to pursue a career in music and given her advice.
Career
Before deciding to pursue music, Ayra Starr started a fashion career at the age of 16 with Quove Model Management.
She shared her first original song to her page in December 2019 after recreating a number of well-known songs on Instagram.
She was noticed by music industry boss Don Jazzy as a result, and she subsequently signed with Mavin Records.
The hit single “Away” from Ayra Starr’s self-titled extended play debut reached number 17 on the US Billboard Top Triller Global and spent two weeks at number four on Nigeria’s Turntable Top 50 in early 2021.
This helped pave the way for the release of her debut full-length studio album, 19 & Dangerous, in August 2021.
The album, which is mostly classified as Afropop and R&B, has received positive reviews from critics, and it spawned two top 40 hits in Nigeria.
The lead single, “Bloody Samaritan,” reached the top of the Top 50 chart, making history as the first solo track by a female artist to do so.
Starr made her debut on the Pandora Predictions chart and peaked at number two on Billboard’s Next Big Sound on August 28, 2021.
Ayra Starr was raised in a musically talented household. She attributes her first inspirations for a career in music to her mother, a former singer, and her brother Dami, a guitarist and songwriter.
She was exposed to several cultures while growing up between Benin and Nigeria, which had an impact on her outlook on life and personality.
Ayra Starr and Dami got their start in songwriting under the guidance of their mother and aunt at a very young age.
Since she was ten years old, she had intended to pursue a career in singing, but her father had urged her to finish high school first.
