English premier league giant, Manchester United have completed the signing of Dutch striker, Wout Weghorst on loan from Burnley until the end of the season.
Weghorst was on loan at Besiktas from Burnley before his loan was terminated with the Turkish club after Manchester United showed interest.
Besiktas confirmed the striker’s loan agreement had been terminated by mutual consent, and the Turkish club received a £2.5 million fee.
United paid Burnley £2.6 million to bring the Dutchman to Old Trafford for the remainder of the current campaign.
Following Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure, Erik ten Hag was open about his desire to add a striker to his team to enhance it.
Weghorst’s loan agreement was ended amicably, according to Besiktas, who also announced they would receive a £2.5 million compensation fee.
This cleared the way for the 30-year-old to join Old Trafford after Manchester United paid Burnley £2.6 million.
There is no option to purchase, and United will pay the striker’s salary.
“I feel privileged to be joining Manchester United,” Weghorst said.
“I’ve played against the club in the past and it’s a fantastic feeling to now have the chance to pull on the famous red shirt.
“I’ve seen United’s progress under Erik ten Hag this season and can’t wait to start playing my part in pushing the team towards its aims.”
“Whatever happens in the next few months, I can promise to give everything to the club for as long as I am here. I thank everyone who has played a part in getting me to this stage, and now I am looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and getting involved straight away.”
There were hopes that Man Utd would have the Dutch international available for the Saturday lunchtime match against Man City at Old Trafford, but Ten Hag stated before to the match that the new acquisition had not been registered by the deadline of Friday midday.
Weghorst scored nine goals and gave four assists in 18 outings while on loan at Besiktas, and he might make his debut when United play Crystal Palace the following Wednesday.
He has 19 times represented the Netherlands at the international level, scoring five goals, including two at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
It is understood that Manchester United were in the market for a new striker after Cristiano Ronaldo left Old Trafford.
The English giant were closed to signing another Dutch international, Cody Gakpo who ended up joining Liverpool because Erik Ten Hag didn’t show interest as he is not the kind of player Man Utd wants.
Man Utd were obviously in need of a natural goal scorer which they felt Cody Gakpo is a winger and the club already have several options on the flank.
With the recent signing of Wout Weghorst, Man Utd will be hoping to challenge for the English premier league title as they have been lacking some power up front.
How do you rate this new Manchester United signing? Do you think Wout Weghorst is the perfect addition to the current Manchester United squad which have been firing lately, with Marcus Rashford in form.
